Dining On The Square In Historic Marietta, Georgia

A variety of restaurants around the historic square in downtown Marietta, Georgia offer diners many enticing options. This city in the northern Atlanta suburbs has an eclectic mix of eateries ranging from Asian to French and Mediterranean to Columbian. For just a quick breakfast pastry or sandwich, stop in at the Australian Bakery or Sugar Cakes Patisserie. For an afternoon treat try Pino Gelato or SweeTreats Ice Cream and Coffee House. Johnny MacCrackens Celtic Firehouse Irish Pub serves pub food and drinks until the wee hours of the morning. Here are some other local favorites to try.

Enjoy lunch or dinner at Blu Greek Taverna, a five star Zagat rated eatery at 26 Mill Street. Their authentic Greek cuisine includes mousaka, lamb stew, souvlaki (kebabs), and a mixed grill featuring lamb, pork, chicken, and beef. Simpatico, at 23 N. Park Square, offers a number of popular entrees cooked in parchment, including the fresh catch of the day. For a sampling of their offerings, order several small plates such as tomato rustica, spring rolls, or pumpkin ravioli. Simpatico is open for dinner only. Its sister restaurant, Willie Raes, is next door. The menu has Cajun influences and offers choices such as fish tacos, PoBoys, pasta jambalaya, and shrimp and grits. Willie Raes is open for lunch and dinner.

For American fare try Shillings on the Square, located at 19 N. Park Square. The main floor restaurant, Streetside Grille, has a casual pub-like atmosphere with a menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, steaks, and seafood. The upstairs dining room, Top of the Square, is an elegant, candlelit eatery featuring filet mignon, lobster, lamb shanks, honey glazed salmon, and chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella. Enjoy live piano music in the upstairs dining room Wednesday-Saturday evenings.

For authentic Italian cuisine, try La Famiglia, at 45 W. Park Square. Its Italian born owners are from Naples and Florence. The dinner menu features mussels, calamari, baked pastas, and veal. The lunch offerings are more casual and include pizzas, calzones, and meatball or Italian sausage sandwiches.

Le Caf Crepe is a delightful French bistro tucked into a remote corner at 90 Marietta Station Walk. Enjoy French onion soup, dinner crepes, and quiche. Saturday night gourmet specials are offered the second Saturday of each month by reservation only.

House of Lu is located one block off the square at 89 Cherokee Street, behind the Strand Theatre. This Asian eatery features coconut shrimp from a special family recipe. Other popular favorites include sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, and General Tsos chicken.

For Columbian cuisine try Kiosco, a couple of blocks south of the square at 48 Powder Springs Road. Specialties include seafood paella, carne asada, arroz con pollo, Columbian tamales, empanadas, and plantains.
